The Dakota name for what is now known as St Anthony’s Falls of the Mississippi in Minneapolis is Owámniomni, meaning "turbulent waters" in English. The dam walls separating these white waters from the flat, engineered and European ones on the right, served 55 years before the dam was decommissioned last year. They are also the walls preventing the endangered paddle fish with a 400m year fossil record from breeding.
