    Itasca State Park state park in Minnesota contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It is possible to 'cross the headwaters' across the shallow 18-inch deep water, crossing from the east side to the west side, where a rock dam indicates the end of Lake Itasca and the beginning of the Mississippi.
