Lely's plan (1889) to turn the Zuiderzee - a salty sea - into a lake and new land. Florike Egmond shows this as an example of the modern Dutch belief in "maakbaarheid", a belief in makeability and malleability. A vision showcased in the qoute: "God made the world, and the Dutch made the Netherlands."
A version of this plan was completed, and today the Zuiderzee no longer exists. In its place there is the sweet water IJsselmeer, and a new province. This project was a direct result of a major flooding, just like the more well-known Delta works. Something few Dutch people know.
